How do you tell if a person is a true friend?
Journals are due by the end of the day today.
Second Quarter Summative Assessment ~ Stargirl
This assessment revolves around the idea of yesterday's journal entry prompt:
How can the characters in Stargirl help you reflect upon/think about your personal life and issues?
Choose one of these themes for your essay:
~Identity. What makes a person a unique individual?
~Newcomers.
~Bullying.
~Cliques and groups.
Writers chose one of the above themes and then jotted down their ideas for their individual essays.

If you could appear o your favorite TV show, what show would it be and how would you fit into the plot? Explain using details and examples.
Intro to classwork:
Last week we focused on Cause & Effect. This week we will look at Point of View, or how a person sees or experiences an event. For example, Narrator's Point of View gives the reader an opportunity to see, hear and know things that many of the other characters do not know and/or have not seen/heard yet.
Continuing to read Stargirl, both in class and on own.

If I were writing this paper, something I would do differently is . . . .
Class discussion (page 572 in the Anthology textbook)
Before we read, we discussed first impressions of the portrait found on this page. What did we see in the picture? What does the picture make us feel? Who was this man? What was he doing? How was he feeling?
Next, we looked at the title, "Harlem." Class members offered their thoughts, beliefs and knowledge regarding Harlem.
Mr. Green read the poem aloud. Class talked about what happens to dreams that are deferred. What are some reasons that dreams get deferred?

Father with the same name as him.
Wanted to be treated like white people.
Was stabbed by an African American woman in Chicago.

What was his age when he died?
Were there any white people who supported him?
Why did he quit being a preacher? (hmm)
Were there any other Black people with him when King was shot?
Why did King "fake" his death so many times?
What happened to his wife after he died?
Was there a different hospital for Blacks?
Why was he killed?
Mr. Green furthered the discussion by addressing many of the questions voiced by class members.

We have begun to look at Stargirl, a Jerry Spinelli book. Some of us have already ready this novel. It is a text that is used at many grade levels. We will be reading it with a focus on Characters, Character Traits, and Character Motivation.

Uncle Pete
Leo Borlock (narrator)
Character traits
Stargirl: dresses differently - long dress/skirt
doesn't seem to mind/notice being different
appears to be quiet-or not talkative
