Mississippi/South 1950s

K  people left the South during the 50's
it's different than other parts of the country
        Race Relations were uneasy
Dr. King just starting his ministry
        racism & segregation was common
        60 + years ago
Blacks & Whites were not treated equally
(relate to Treyvon Martin:  what do you think you know about him?  good kid, problems in school,
played football, Black guy walking home, killed for "no" reason)
Emmitt Till-14 yr old, born and raised in Chicago, IL,  relatives in Mississippi, in 1955 mom sent him
and 3 cousins to spend time with family during summer, killed allegedly because of cat
call at a white woman, taken out/kidnapped from great uncle's home, his body was found
                          three days later

Take a look at the cover.

   White youth with fishing pole

    newspaper w/headlinesw
    dark background

Mississippi Trial, 1955  is historical fiction.  Told from the perspective of a white youth.
How comfortable would you be walking through a predominately white neighborhood?
Many students stated that they would carry a weapon. .   .  .    .   why?    because "they" would
be looking at me as if I didn't belong.  i would feel threatened.
